Hours of Service Violations

Des Moines Hours of Service Violations Attorney

Bus drivers have a tremendous responsibility in helping millions of people travel safely. Maneuvering a bus is not easy, and it is important for the drivers to be alert at all times. This is why there are regulations in place to help prevent drowsy or irresponsible driving. In the case of bus drivers, following these rules can avoid deadly accidents.

Sometimes, bus drivers and transportation companies fail to adhere to the hours of service regulations in place to keep all passengers safe. If a drowsy or incapable driver has caused you or your loved one pain and suffering, do not let this negligence go unreported.

Bus Driver Hours of Service Laws

Whether a bus driver operates a school bus, city bus, or charter bus, they are expected to adhere to specific hours of service. These hours of service laws regulate the amount of time that drivers can spend behind the wheel so that they are not driving while fatigued. The following are the laws in place regarding bus driver hours of service:

  • The maximum consecutive driving time allowed is 8 hours of duty
  • A driver may not drive after being on-duty for 15 consecutive hours
  • A driver may not drive if they have been on duty for 60 hours in 7 days or 70 hours in 8 days
  • A minimum of 8 hours must be spent in the sleeper berth in two hour increments

It is the responsibility of bus drivers and bus companies to follow these hours of service regulations so that drowsiness does not affect the safety of the many passengers on the bus.
