Preventing Dog Bites for Non-Owners

|

It is true that legal responsibility for a pet’s behavior rests entirely with its owners. Unless you have deliberately harmed or provoked a dog, you are not to blame for an attack. Of course, none of this means that you should take any unnecessary risks around animals. Using a little caution whenever you are around a dog you do not know can help you stay safe.

Unfortunately, there is no advice that can guarantee injuries will never occur. If you have been hurt in a dog attack, Des Moines dog bite injury lawyers LaMarca Law Group, P.C. can help you fight for the compensation you deserve. Call us at (515) 705-0233.

How to Approach a Dog

Whenever you approach a strange dog, whether in a park or an old friend’s home, please follow these precautions to keep yourself safe:

Ask the dog’s owner for permission. Some dogs do not like being touched by strangers or in certain ways. Their owners should be able to provide any information you need before petting their dogs.

Let the dog “get to know” you. Hold out one hand with the fingers curled in to protect them. Let the dog smell your hand and decide whether or not he or she likes you. If the dog shows any signs of disapproval – backing away, placing the tail between the legs, growling – do not attempt to touch him or her.

Be gentle. Like people, dogs are often wary about being touched by people they do not know. Begin with a light touch to show you have no intention of hurting the dog. Give him or her time to come around to trusting you.
