The motorist who caused a four-vehicle accident along Interstate Highway 235 near 56th Street was traveling more than 90 miles per hour on the inside shoulder. The accident, which occurred on Monday, January 9 at approximately 7:30 a.m., happened when the driver crashed into a median and made his way into traffic.
According to Des Moines Police spokesman Sergeant Paul Parizek, a 38-year-old man from Dexter was cited for careless driving in relation to the accident. More charges may be filed after the investigation is concluded. Parizek said the man did not appear to be inebriated during the crash. Although police officers have yet to determine the rate of speed the man was going when he caused the accident, witnesses said he was driving at a rate of 90 mph. “I saw him hit the [median] a couple of times and then just keep going,” a witness said.
