The Iowa Department of Transportation reported that as of Monday, October 3, there were approximately 282 deaths in the state this year from car accidents. That number is 37 higher than the number of fatalities recorded last year around the same time. This year marks the highest number of fatalities from vehicle accidents in the state in five years, the Iowa DoT said.
Iowa State Patrol spokesman Sergeant Nathan Ludwig said the force was assigned to investigate 125 of these cases this year, whereas last year they were tasked to investigate only 101. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is concerned about the increase in vehicular accident deaths. He made a vow in July to include the prevention of cyclist and motorcyclist deaths in his list of next year’s state legislative priorities.
