Our hearings in Iowa before the workers' compensation commissioner are initially before a deputy workers compensation commissioner – they’re administrative law judges. The hearings are limited to three hours total. They are in a very small room with just the administrative law judge and the defense attorney. Medical records are submitted just like medical testimony, so we rarely have doctors testify. The injured worker testifies and then we wait for a decision. It can be weeks – maybe months, depending on the complexity – until we get that decision.
