The family of a 28-year-old Des Moines, Iowa resident, who was unarmed when he was shot to death by a member of the Des Moines Police Department, has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the city on Wednesday, November 4 at the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.
According to a report from The Des Moines Register, the family is claiming that the policewoman accused of unlawfully causing the young man’s death deprived the deceased of his constitutional rights when she fired a weapon on him through the window of her government-issued police squad car on June 9, 2015.
The Des Moines police chief concluded that the police officer in question, who is a seven-year veteran of the department, was merely performing her duties as a law enforcement agent. A grand jury did not indict the policewoman in August 2015.
