The Des Moines Police Department reported that a 34-year-old local woman sustained critical injuries after she was struck by a pick-up truck at around 3:30 a.m. on a Tuesday late last month. The woman was crossing the street near 44th Street and Urbandale Avenue when she was hit.
The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery for her injuries in an attempt to save her life. After over a week in the hospital, the woman has since died from her injuries, Des Moines Police confirmed.
The driver of the pick-up called 9-11 immediately after the crash. The vehicle was operated by a 56-year-old man. Investigators are still trying to determine what happened, and if speed or other factors could have occurred at the time of the accident. Police Sgt. Paul Parizek was quoted saying, “The driver didn’t leave. There was nothing criminal on his part as far as that goes”.
The westbound lane of Urbandale Avenue was temporarily closed between 43rd and 44th Street while police officers conducted an investigation on the crash and cleared the scene.
