Last week, President Obama signed an order to have all federal workplaces improve their safety standards by reducing injuries and illnesses incurred in the workplace in the next four years.
By 2014, Obama hopes all government agencies will improve their safety standards to cut the number of employee injuries, cut the time spent reviewing a claim, and speed up an injured or ill employee’s return to the workplace.
In 2009, 79,000 new claims were filed by federal employees, and $1.6 billion were spent by the government on workers’ compensation.
“Many of these work-related injuries and illnesses are preventable, and executive departments and agencies can and should do even more to improve workplace safety and health, reduce the financial burden of injury on taxpayers, and relieve unnecessary suffering by workers and their families,” stated the President.
