Des Moines Residents Divided over Decision to Add Traffic Cameras

|

On July 12th, the Des Moines City Council hired a Massachusetts-based company to install a number of traffic cameras at various intersections yet to be determined.  Police estimate each camera could cost the city around $100,000 a year.

Capt. Doug Harvey argues, “It’s a very good tool.  It lowers crashes at intersections”.  However, former Police Chief Bill McCarthy disagrees.  McCarthy has continuously argued that the cost is not worth the small increase in traffic safety.  He said, “The truth is that it is about money, money money… I believe it’s a poor way to treat your citizenry”.

Others are arguing the money spent on cameras could be spent on more officers to protect roadways all over, not just at intersections.
