Last year, the number of auto accident-related fatalities was the lowest it has been in Iowa since World War II times. This year’s numbers are shaping up to be even lower.
As of this week, there have been 191 fatalities related to traffic crashes on Iowa roads. In 2009, there had been 227 by this time, with the number increasing to 372 by the end of the year. These numbers amount to a 16% decrease in fatalities from 2009 to 2010.
When asked how this decrease is possible when the police are dealing with budget cuts, Iowa State Patrol trooper Paul Rairden responded:
“I think technology has helped a great deal. They locate problem areas. In general, I think all departments, city-state, and county all do that. They locate their areas where they’re having problems, fatalities, bad accidents, speed complaints, whatever, and then we can concentrate on those areas.”
The state also has a 93% compliance rate when it comes to buckling up and is also the second-lowest state in the nation in terms of alcohol-related fatalities.
