Coal ash pits have been found by the US Environmental Protection Agency to be carcinogenic and at 2,000 times the “acceptable” rate in some cases. Unfortunately, there are several coal ash pits around Iowa.
Dozens of sites across the state have had coal ash dumped in them at some point. Unfortunately, this can get into drinking water and cause terrible problems when it is not contained properly. Unfortunately, this information has been known since 2002, but only recently released, putting many lives in danger.
